Wiksten Tulip Skirt
If you love reading sewing blogs, you’ll no doubt have come across a few spruiking Jenny Gordy’s Wiksten Tulip Skirt pattern, published in Stitch magazine (Fall 2008). Here at Tessuti, we can now happily raise our hands and declare ourselves big fans too. My version, inspired by Leah’s, is made up in a chambray picked up a few months ago from our beloved remnant table (Colette is trying to source more – we’ll keep you posted) and it’s the perfect summer skirt. The pattern is very straight-forward but be sure to check out Jenny’s corrections here before you start sewing. At the moment, my machine and it’s button holer aren’t the best of mates so I ended up using press studs to finish it off. I’m very happy with the result and have another black linen version in the works. How many versions of one pattern do you think is acceptable ’cause I’m thinking a winter one (two?) might be on the sewing cards…
Nichola just finished this one in our Kartel Denim, a birthday gift for her sister. And she’s started on another one for herself. And remember Rachel? Here’s her version, in the same denim.
Like I said – Big. Fans. And we’re not the only ones. Check out the Wiksten Patterns Flickr page. There’s a whole lotta Tulip Skirt love out there, no? Thanks Jenny!

I love the contrasting stitching and buttons. Perfection! I simply cannot wait for summer and cannot wait to try this pattern! Wonderful inspiration!
Your skirt looks amazing!
Thanks for the shout out – and just in case you were wondering, no you can't have too many – I've made four of these skirts so far!

Stop it stop it stop it!! Will you guys please stop posting pics of all these gorgeous garments. Now I have to make a chambray skirt as well as a drop waisted dress!!!! And I thought all my summer sewing was over. I am supposed to be making curtains for my lounge room gah!
I was just thinking I might make another of these versatile skirts! I love your stripey singlet with it Lisa- is that one you made too? Thanks for the linky-love :o)
Re buttonhole issues I hear we're to have sewing machines at the next burda club so hopefully you can do the buttonholes on one of them!
Hey EmilyKate,
Nope, I didn't make this stripey. Just feeding the addiction from one of my fave shops – Morrison . My machine is SCREAMING for a service so hopefully that too might sort out my button holing issues. See you soon!
I love Wiksten – can anyone recommend any patterns that I could use/adapt to make some clothes (especially the cute pinafores) like hers?
Such a great skirt. I love the red buttons and stitching. I may just have to try something similar. Do you think it would work if it sat on the hips? Waisted skirts don't work on my body.
Love the skirt and that dark denim is stunning. I've been keen to try this skirt for a while but this post has pushed me over the edge.
Hi i love the look of this skirt too and that flickr pool is full of lovely variations, do you think it's still possible to track down the issue that contained the pattern?
Bernice – Nichola's first version of this skirt was made in a size too large so it sits on her hips. She still likes it and wears it, but her preference is for the waisted version.
Imogen – you can still purchase this issue via the Interweave link provided in the blog post. I'm not sure if there's anyone locallly (in Aust) that still has it.
Cheers,
Lisa
Hi,
I just bought the online edition of this magazine from the Interweave website.
It didn't come with the patterns for the skirts even though the website says it should. Nooooooooooooooo! I was going to make the skirt this weekend.
Did anyone else experience this misfortune?
Thanks,
Fi
Hi Fi,
That doesn't sound right!….call Nichola at the Tessuti Melbourne store today…perhaps she could help you out.
Colette
Thanks Colette, I will!
I ordered some lovely Hokko bow fabric in black from you last week and it's sitting here begging to be made up into the skirt.
Thanks again,
Fi
