A Sundress In September – Vogue 2289
A sundress for Gabby and a sundress for September. I can’t take credit for this make as it was actually her Nonna Silva who made it for her. After trying to find it for a few years, I finally scored this long out-of-print Ralph Lauren pattern on eBay – Vogue 2289.
This one definitely needed a toile and doing so led to the following changes:
- eliminating the side pockets. Because the skirt is cut on the bias, the pockets distorted the side seam.
- There was gaping at the armhole so the bust dart was repositioned.
- Created a more cut-away style of armhole, using tear-away at the neckline and armholes.
- the neckline was raised.
- lined the inside bodice with our bemberg rayon lining.
- added a fused neck facing. The pattern suggests lining the bodice in heavier fabrics, but self lining in a silk or viscose works better for this blousy style.
- Extending the back zipper all the way to the top of the waistband.
- Adding vertical buttonholes to the waistband and buttons to the straps so that button is visible at back.
Gabby chose our Black Bedford Washed Linen (other colours here) which, at 160gsm, is perfect for a sundress.
We’re often asked about how to get hold of vintage patterns and our best advice is to regularly stalk eBay and Etsy, as well as the numerous online vintage pattern sellers. You might not find exactly the one you’re after but you might find something similar or even some equally fabulous vintage pattern gem. But if you’re looking to create a similar style to this one, you could try the Luana Apron Dress pattern.
This is gorgeous!
I’ve recently had a double mastectomy and I keep looking at dress patterns trying to figure out what/how I would modify for being flat-chested. Any suggestions? 🙂
Thank you!
Pattern modifications will vary depending on the design so to get the best result, we’d recommend working with a teacher/instructor to create a block. If you’re in Sydney or Melbourne, we hold classes that can help
Looks fabulous, perhaps an inspiration for a future sundress pattern. I’m not so good at the no waste or PDF patterns so a hard copy is always a project we are prepared to have ago with .
I am very excited to see this dress featured in your blog. I remember making this dress in bright green linen 30 years ago. I got lots of positive comments.
(Unfortunately I no longer have the pattern).
yay! i still have this pattern! and this dress looks amazing on you Gabby : )
Another fabulous crossover back Vogue pattern is V2479 by Betty Jackson. Very similar look and less complicated, truly lovely in linen. My young niece took mine to wear!
I have this pattern from about 40 years ago! I made it for myself, the result was hideous to say the least. It didn’t suit my short waisted body at all. Needless to say I looked nothing like the sylph like models. I cut it up and made library bags for my son’s! If anyone wants the pattern I’m happy to gift it.
I realize this is an old post, but would you happen to still have the pattern? If so, what size?
Hi Cherie, try searching Ebay or Etsy, it pops up from time to time.
Hi I am looking for this pattern – size 12
