NEW :: THE KYOTO VEST PATTERN
New week, new pattern! We’re excited to bring you our latest design – the Kyoto Vest.
This simple, shawl-collared wrap vest features bound edges and armholes. Effortlessly stylish, Kyoto is the ideal layering piece for the cooler months and can be worn over dresses, tops and shirts. The pattern includes options for both a longer length (above) or shorter length (below). And the cool thing about this design? It’s made up of only ONE pattern piece!
Version A is designed for boiled wool knits or boiled felted wools as it features raw edges at the back neck and shoulder seams. Version B is for double-sided woven wools or wool blends. The shoulder and back neck seams include a Hong Kong bound finish which allows you to wear the vest as a reversible item.
For an extra detail and bonus neck warmth, we like to close the vest with a kilt pin.
Any of our Bollito boiled wools are perfect for Version A. For our black and white (version B) pictured in this post, we’ve used a beautiful double-sided wool – Two Sisters (below). The olive check fabric above is our 100% wool Subtle Touch, available at Chatswood only.
Other perfect fabrics for Kyoto (Version B) include any double sided wools with more options available in store. The 30mm wool binding that we’ve used on all of our featured vests.
The pattern comes in (Australian) sizes XXS through to XL and is now available in both hardcopy and PDF copy shop/print-at-home version.
Hey, that’s a good looking vest….the collar may be too much for me, but I can cut that down, and it will be a wonderful cover for Fall days in the US…love the idea of using a double faced wool..
Gorgeous! You keep producing winner after winner. I know what I’ll be making this weekend. Thank you!
I love this vest! I decided to make one for Mum for Mother’s day. I browsed fabric online, came into the store yesterday, tried on the samples, found my chosen fabric. But I got a shock at the price of the binding -it is the same price of fabric and pattern combined, doubling the cost of the vest. Are you able to suggest any alternatives?
Hi Emily. You could absolutely make version A (for boiled/felted wools) and leave the edges raw. Alternatively, you could try making your own but it’s crucial to find just the right weight. We tried a couple of alternative (and more inexpensive) bindings during the testing phase and chose this one because of the high quality and availability of 30mm width – important because you’re sewing over the edge of a heavier fabric. Anything under 30mm might be a bit fiddly. I hope that helps.
Thanks for responding!
I made it up with the wool binding, it looks awesome, I love it and importantly Mum loves it. I didn’t mentally distinguish the two types of binding in the pattern instructions, making necessary a mad dash to Tessuti for more wool binding on late Saturday afternoon. Finished product on Instagram under emnourse.
This is the most satisfying quick make ever! I opted for the short version out of a glorious muted lilac/grey boiled wool. Left the edges raw for a soft look and I was done from cutting out the paper pattern to finishing in under 3/4 of an hour. Thanks Ladies for another fab pattern!
I love this vest but the sizing cuts out at about a 16, any possibility of offering in bigger sizes?
Hi Lauren. There are no plans to extend the sizing of Kyoto at this point in time
