Introducing the Romy Top Pattern
*PATTERN NOW UPDATED TO INCLUDE THE ROMY TOP AND ROMY DRESS*
Meet our latest pattern and the perfect piece to slide into summer – the Romy Top! You may have seen this before as it’s already been doing some solid rounds in Colette’s holiday wardrobe.
This year, we fell hard for the square neckline (see also our Claudia Dress). It’s a little bit nineties and a whole lot cool.
Romy is semi-fitted across the top, lengthens out into a gentle a-line and features simple shoestring straps, facings and bust darts. There are no closures so it can easily be slipped on and off.
The design is a little wardrobe winner and works with everything – jeans, skirts, pants and shorts. Colette loves wearing hers (in gingham linen) with the Evie Bias Skirt.
You can wear it out or tuck it in, wear it long or crop it short. And with the high front and even higher back, Romy can easily be worn with a strapless bra.
My version here is made up in our Ring Around Navy linen. I prefer a more cropped length so shortened it by 10cm (approx 4″).
Colette’s Romy below (in silk CDC) is pictured below.
Recommended fabrics for this pattern include woven fabrics such as linen, cotton, silk, rayon and viscose. The Romy Top comes in (Australian) (now available in sizes 6-22) and is now available in both hardcopy and PDF copy shop/print-at-home version.
Happy sewing…and don’t forget to share your make with us on Instagram by using the #RomyTop and #TessutiPatterns hashtags!
Ladies (and gentlemen, for the guys who sew for their women), please note how prettily the bias skirt hangs in some view of this pattern. There’s a lesson here: Bias is user-friendly for women’s curves! The most sensible and adaptable version of this pattern would be cut on the bias, to go over the female body in a flattering way.
Love the fabric. Is it in stock?
Yes, all fabrics featured here are currently in stock Sandra
Lovely style for warm weather but the arm hole seems a little low for me, if I shorten the bodice how much would you suggest and should I also shorten the back by same amount?
I have some black silk crepe de chene and instead of just facing, I would like to totally self line the top with the fabric.
Is it necessary to block the fabric with interfacing?
Hi Sharon,
Of course you can self line by cutting the facing all the way to the hemline. But we would highly recommend interfacing the inside facing to just under the bust eg. the depth of the facing in the pattern.
I used some fine linen for the top and I added a lining made of cotton – and I got a two-faced top! I can wear it inside out, and only shoulder straps show that this top is not that simple as it seems:) Made 4 or maybe 5 tops alredy, cannot stop playing with colors! I just dont need any regular t-shirts in my life any more, Romi top totally replaced them:)
What a fabulous idea to make it reversible Anastassia!
I really struggled with the straps and facing, tying myself in knots. I did get it done but actually have no idea how (just lots of faffing and pulling bits in and out), lots of unpicking! Not sure I want to do it again, but I really like the top. Is there a wee video of instructions anywhere?
Glad you got there in the end Julia. Unfortunately we don’t have a tutorial for this step. If you ever get into trouble again, feel free to reach out via email
