Introducing the Astrid Sundress
Meet our latest pattern – the Astrid Sundress! This pattern combines all the things we love about a sundress with a few details that make it stand out from the sundress crowd. Astrid is a pull-on, midi-length sundress with a gentle A-line silhouette. The design features wide shoulder straps as well as centre front and back seams.
Forward facing side seams contain inseam pockets and a wide hem panel is detailed with multiple knife pleats at centre front and back.
We tested the pattern in a wide range of fabrics and found that it works best in a mid-weight linen as well as cotton poplin. My version (above and below) is made up in our Adele Navy – also available in these colours. I LOVE this fabric – it’s fantastically crisp and incredibly cool to the touch which is just what you want and need on a hot summer’s day.
Colette’s (below) is made in our Dark Navy Bedford washed linen – other Bedford colours here.
To this version she added contrast thread for the topstitching details on the straps, centre front/back seams, pocket and pocket openings, as well as the hem. Add as much or as little as you like!
Wondering if Astrid looks good in a print? You bet it does. Here’s a sample (below) made up in our this beautiful Tempered Garden cotton poplin (sold out).
If you love a bold and bright option, here’s another sample made up in our Calais Yolk, which also comes in all these glorious colours.
Three quarters into this blog post, you may be asking yourself…but can I wear it with a bra? Thanks to Astrid’s wide straps the answer is absolutely YES. Colette is wearing a strapless one (above) and I’m wearing mine (below) with one that has mid-positioned straps (as opposed to the straps that sit wider on your chest), that can be positioned in just the right spot beneath the straps.
The Astrid Sundress is the ultimate summer staple piece and we hope it ticks all the boxes as your perfect summer frock for work, play, picnics, parks, anywhere. The pattern comes in (Australian) sizes 6-22 and is now available in both hardcopy and PDF copy shop/print-at-home versions.
We can’t wait to see your versions and if you’re sharing them with us on Instagram, don’t forget to use the #TessutiPatterns #AstridSundress hashtags.
I love this style! I recently found I needed a FBA on Eva and, thanks to Silva’s kind assistance, I now have a comfortable dress to wear. How would I do an FBA on this gorgeous dress? PS Will you be posting a tutorial on how Silva does her FBAs – it was such an interesting way to do it. Regards, Sandra
I have ordered the Astrid pattern. I’m also going to try it in a shorter version. Without the lower section. Thanks for another great pattern!
Where can i find the numbers for yardage for your patterns? i am getting the astrid pattern and can’t seem to locate the yardage needs.
Hi Carol. We list meterage (not yardage) on our patterns but here’s a handy link to a conversion chart you can use.
Thank you for another beautiful pattern ! I am looking forward to making it up in a navy Leon linen over my summer break.
Being an hour glass figure whose sand is running out, I usually grade patterns, at the side seams, from an 8 at the bust to a 10 at the hips – will this adjustment work with the forward facing side seams?
Hi Janet, We would recommend making a toile first to see if you need to grade out at the hips, between size 8 and 10.
The Astrid Dress is a-line at the hips.
Hello Collette,
This pattern looks so relaxed on you, but I am anything but trying (a) cut it out firstly on the floor as the the layout on 140 made it difficult to make my usual adjustments for inbetween sizing, on my sewing trestle. (b) Once got up off the floor, I found the first step quite intimidating ( the pocket)… having made my alterations, the forward seam made the reading of the construction of the pocket a bit bewildering. I searched to see if you have made any video tutorials on this pattern, as yet sadly appears not.
I think the labelling of intermediate level is rather brave, I have been sewing for 30 years, and find this quite challenging.
But I won’t give up yet, as have cut it out in beautiful expensive French navy linen.
Fingers crossed it works out for me. I will just have to figure it out slowly.
Cheers,
Bernadette
